Taliban warns US over Afghan war – 18 Dec 09

A senior Taliban commander has warned the Untied States that it will be defeated in Afhganistan, even if it sends an extra 200,000 US troops.

Located in the so-called valley of death near the border with Pakistan, Taliban fighters vowed to fight to the very end.

However, the movement will not just be battling foreign forces as the Afghan government, with help from US and Nato forces, moves to equip and train tribla fighters.

Ex-guantanamo inmates gain asylum in Palau – 21 Nov 09

A group of Uighurs freed from the US dteention centre at Guanatamo Bay have been flown to Palau, the island nation in the Pacific ocean.

The move is part of the Ameriacn administration’s efforts to close the infamous prison.

However, the former detainees say they feel isolated in Palau, which currently offers asylum to at least 17 men once held by the United States.

For the first few arrivals, adjusting to their new freedom in an unknonw land poses a major challenge.

Mexico ‘opens its arms’ to immigrants – 31 Oct 09

Mexico has taken steps to allow the increasing number of foreigners who flood into the country each year, whether legally or illegally, to apply for citizenship.

Most of Mexico’s immigrants come from Central America, but at least one million of them arrive from United States.

Al Jazeera’s Franc Contrersa reports from the central Mexican town of San Miguel de Allende, where foreigners say they appreciate a simpler kind of life.
