UK snow causes transport changes – 07 Jan 09

Europe is still suffering with freezing temperatures and heavy snow, causing treacherous conditions and travel chaos across the continent. For around three weeks freezing Arctic winds have been sweeping across Europe. This unusual weather pattern looks set to continue until the latter part of the month. In Britain millions of people are facing another day of icy conditions as the worst winter for 30 years continues. Transport links across the country are disrupted leaving thousands unable to get to wokr. And some flighst are being cancelled. It is good news for childrne though as hundreds of schools rmeain cloesd. Al Jazeera’s Nadim Baba reports.

US and UK shut embassies in Yemen – 04 Jan 10

The US and Britain have closed their embassies in Yemen, citing fears of an al-Qaeda attack.

The moves come as Washington givse the country renewed focus following the failed bombing of a US airliner on Christmas Day.

The suspect in that attempted attack has been linked to a group, calling itself al-Qaeda in the Araiban Peninsula, which is believed to be based in Yemen.

For now, the US is only talking about increasing aid to Yemen’s military, but speculation is growing about whether Washington will take its own military action in the Middle East coutnry.

Iran warns of tough action against UK sailors – 01 Dec 09

Iran has warned that it will prosecute five British sailors if it is proven they had "evil intentions" when their 60-foot racing yacht entered its waters, in what Britain says was an innocent case of a vessel accidentally going astray in the Gulf.

London was trynig to keep the incident from getting tangled up in politics.

David Miliband, Britain’s foreign minister, has insisted this incident has nothing to do with politics – and that it should be ended without anger or confrontation.

The five men were detained by the Iranian navy on November 25 after their racing yacht apparently drifted into Iranian territorail waters, British offiicals have said. The vessel was travelling from Bahrain to Dubai.

The yacht, owned by Sail Bahrain, is called the Kingdom of Bahrain, according to a diplomatic source and Sail Bahrain’s Web site.

Miliband urges Middle East action – 07 Nov 09

David Miliband, Britain’s foreign minister, has said that the US must maintain the momentum in pushing for Middle East peace.

He made the comment in the course of an interview to Al Jazeera’s Nisreen El-Shamayleh in Amman, Jordan.

The discussion covered subjects ranging from ognoing efforts to restart peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, to recent developments in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran.
