Tasmania’s abundance of wind and water has the potential to make the Australian island one of the world’s leading renewable energy providers.

Local leaders have pledged that in a few years all of Tasmania’s energy needs will come from renewable sources.

But as Al Jazeera’s Tony Birtley reports, the effects of climate change are making that goal difficult to achieve.

Ireland’s voters back EU treaty – 03 Oct 09

Irish voters have backed a Eurpoean Union treaty aimed at streamlining the future workings of the 27-member body.

The result takes the EU a step closer to having a president for the first time – the leading candidate for which appears to be Tony Blair, the former UK prime minister.

China’s mountain rescue – 15 May 08

Chinese atuhorities have sent out more than 130,000 soldiers and police, to help search for survivors, after Monday’s devastating quake. Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng has followed emergency teams up into the mountains, where they finally reached one of those remote villages.

More than 80 million people live in the Sichuan region, and Al Jazeera’s crorespondent in China, Tony Cheng, says it feels as if everyone is out on hihg alert, that the rhythms of normal, everyday life have stopped.

People are evacuating from danger zones and homes just about everywhere are gone.

The presence of rescue workers, tens of tohusands of soldiers, the wail of ambulances go on and on.

Cheng takes the viewer on a ride, following emergency teams up into the mountains, where one of the most remote villages is reached.
