South Africa homeless ‘further marginalised’ by World Cup – 04 Dec 09

Homeless people in South Africa say they are being pushed out as the country prepares to host the 2010 Football World Cup.

Organisers, under pressure to clean up the streets, insist that they are working to integrate the population, but other reports suggest the homeless will be housed in temporary camps.

‘Vulture funds’ sue poverty-stricken Liberia – 26 Nov 09

Two offshore investment funds are taking the poverty-stricken African state of Liberia to Londno’s High Court, over an unpaid debt that dates back to the 1970s.

The Caribbean-based companies, described as "vulture funds" want more than $20m.

But Liberia says it can’t afford to pay the debt, and accuses the firms of profiting from poverty.

In New York City – where the cost of living is one of the highest in the world – it is reported that more than four million people have difficulty affording food.
