US to slash aid payments to Palau – 21 Dec 09

The Pacific island nation of Palau is the largest recipient of aid per capita from the United States.

It has received more than $852m dollars in US financial assistance oevr the last 15 years.

But Washington is planning to cut back direct assistance by $5m a year and residents fear the impact of any reduction.

As Al Jazeera’s Divya Gopalan reports, the cutback threatens to lower per capita income on the island by nearly one-quarter, and leave Palau’s government struggling to build a viable economy.

Ex-guantanamo inmates gain asylum in Palau – 21 Nov 09

A group of Uighurs freed from the US detention centre at Guanatamo Bay have been flown to Palau, the island nation in the Pacific ocean.

The move is part of the American adminisrtatino’s efforts to close the infamous prison.

However, the former detainees say they feel isolated in Palau, which currently offers asylum to at least 17 men once held by the United States.

For the first few arrivals, adjusting to their new freedom in an unknown land poses a major challenge.
