It’s a domestic problem that’s about as difficult as any international issue facing the Israeli prime minister and his shaky coalition government.
A fresh investigation has begun into Ehud Olmert’s conduct while serving as finance minister.
And it leaves many wondering how long he will survive politically, much less to negotiate with Palestinians.

Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says further military action is likely against Palestinians firing rockets from Gaza. This, just hours after the Israeli military confirmed its operation in the strip had wound down. The apparent pause in the assault comes as the European Union and the United States send senior politicians to the region to try to put what is left of the Annapolis peace process back on track. Al Jazeera English’s Ayman Moyheldin has the latest from Jerusalem.
Israel’s war in Lebanon in 2006 was a “large and serious” failure for the country’s armed forces, according to a final report on the conflict. The investigation headed by Eliahu Winograd “found grave failings in the decision-making … both on the military and political levels”. David Chater reports.
