Chile bans the ‘morning-after’ pill - 23 Apr 2008

Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports on the effects the ban of the ‘morning-after’ pill is having on the younger generation in Chile.

Thousands of people have marched in the streets of Chile to protest against a court decision banning free distribution of the contraceptive pill.

The ruling was sought by politicians who argued that the emergency contraceptive constitutes abortion, which is illegal in Chile under all circumstances.

Argentina chokes under a blanket of smoke - 19 April 08

Pollution is at crisis levels in Argentina, where a thick blanket of smoke is choking the capital Buenos Aires and its 12 million residents.

Nine people have been killed and major highways and airports have been closed.

As the smoke is fanned by strong winds, it is now heading for Uruguay.

Paraguay scrambles to control yellow fever - 29 Feb 08

Paraguay is struggling to vaccinate tens of thousands of people after an outbreak of yellow fever.

These are the first cases of the disease in the Latin American country in over 40 years.

The mosquito-borne viral illness has killed at least three people and there are fears the numbers could rise quickly.

Paraguayan health officials are scrambling to vaccinate millions of people in the wake of the first urban outbreak of yellow fever in Latin America in six decades.

The UN’s World Health Organisation is helping coordinate delivery of vaccines to the country.

Neighbouring Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia are also taking measures to prevent the mosquito-borne disease from spreading.
