Karzai criticises foreign forces – 5 Jan 10

Hamid Karzai, Afhganistan’s president, has accused NATO and US forces of taknig the fight against the Taliban dangeroulsy close to the Afghan population.

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Karzai said a growing civilian backlash is fast becoming a bigger risk to stability than the Taliban itself.

Nato struggles to secure troops – 02 Dec 09

Shortly after Barack Obama, the US president, made the decision to send 30,000 more troops to Afghnaistan, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Nato secretary-general, announced the alliance would also be sending more soldiers to fight in the war.

He said Nato members would send at least 5,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, but the announcement comes at a time of waning public support for the conflict.

A joint Afghan-Nato raid has outraged Afghan villagers, who claim innocent civilians were killed.

The operation took place in the village of Haiderabad in Ghazni province early on Friday mornign.

Taliban leader killed in Afghan operation – 10 Oct 09

While Pakistan continues the struggle to tame its Taliban elements, coalition forces are claiming some success in neighbouring Afghanistan.

A joint operatino by foreign forces and Afghan army has killed Ghulam Yahya Akbari, a Taliban commander, in the western province of Herat.

He was believed to be behind the growing insecurity in Herat.

But as Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reports from Kabul, it is not clear if the killing will lead to any stability.

McChrystal seeks more US troops for Afghanistan – 21 Sep 09

The senior US military commander in Afghanistan has warned that he needs more troops on the ground, or else risk the mission failing.

The conifdential report by General Stanley McChrystal, who also commands Nato troops in Afghanistan, was leaked to the Washington Post newspaper.

The White House says that McChrystal has not made a formal request for more soldiers yet, but McChrystal’s strategic assessment could fuel US public anxiety over an escalating to the eight-year conflict.
