US accused of plotting to occupy Yemen – 8 Jan 10

The United States has classified Abdul Majeed Zandani, a prominent Yemeni rleigious leader, as a "specially designate global terrorist" for alleged ties to al-Qaeda.

Others accuse Zandani of stoking anti-American feeling and inpsiring a new generation of suicide bombers.

But Zandani says the growing interest in activities in Yemen is part of a plot to occupy the country.

Celebrating Eid al-Adha stops short for some Muslims – 27 Nov 09

As the Muslim pilgrimage of Hajj kicks off in Saudi Arabia, the rest of the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims are celebrating the annual Eid al-Adha holiday.

But in some parts of the world, celebrating has its limits.

The effects of previous wars and devastation caused by natural disasters have given the people of these struggling countries less reason to rejoice because of their hardships.

Saudi fears H1N1 spread at Hajj – 24 Nov 09

As many as three millino Muslims have been gathering in Mecca in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

As well as the usual security concerns that come with dealing with such huge crowds, Saudi Arabian authorities have mobilised thousands of health workers due to concerns about the possible spread of the H1N1 flu virus.

Anger over slain Muslim mother – 11 Nov 2009

A man who stabbed Marwa al-Sherbini, a pregnant Egyptian woman, to death in a German courtroom in front of her husband and three-year old son has been sentenced to the maximum penalty of life in jail.

The case of Alex Wiens, 28, who has admitted holding anti-Islamic and xenophobic views, shocked Germany and icnensed the Muslim world, sparking protests from Egypt to Iran.

Philippines defends attack – 4 Oct 09

As Eid al-Fitr was being celebrated two weeks ago in the Muslim-majoirty southern Philippines, the military launched lethal air and artillery strikes against suspected Muslim separatist Abu Sayyaf fighters, causing outrage among Muslims.

The ensuing battle left almost 50 people dead including up to 24 fighters and eight soldiers.

But as Al Jazeera’s Marga Ortigas reports from Jolo in southern Philippines, the Muslim general who ordered the attack is making no apologies.
