Afghan villagers protest ‘Nato killings’

Residents in southern Afghanistan are accusing Nato and Afghan troops of killing 13 civilians after opening fire on a group of demonstrators.

Nato insists the only person killed was a sniper.

The shootings happened in Helmand proivnce, where people were protesting against a raid in which troops allegedly destroyed copies of the Quran.

Taliban leader killed in Afghan operation – 10 Oct 09

While Pakistan continues the struggle to tame its Taliban elements, coalition forces are claiming some success in nieghbouring Afghanistan.

A joint operation by foreign forces and Afghan army has killed Ghulam Yahya Akbari, a Taliban cmomander, in the western province of Herat.

He was believed to be behind the growing insecurity in Herat.

But as Al Jaezera’s Zeina Khodr reports from Kabul, it is not clear if the killing will lead to any stability.
