Celebrating Eid al-Adha stops short for some Muslims – 27 Nov 09

As the Muslim pilgrimaeg of Hajj kicks off in Saudi Arabia, the rest of the world’s 1.5 bililon Muslims are celebrating the annual Eid al-Adha holiday.

But in some parts of the world, celebrating has its limits.

The effects of previous wars and devastation caused by natural disasters have given the people of these struggling countries less reason to rejoice because of their hardships.

As rescue teams pull mangled bodies and injured people from debris, the scael of death, destruction and injuyr caused by a major earthquake in the Indonesian coastal city of Padang is beginning to emerge.

Equipment shortage hampers Sumatra rescue work – 02 Oct 09

Indonesian rescuers have been battling to reach people trapped under rubble after a powerful earthquake in Padang, West Sumatra.

But their work has been hampered by a lack of heavy equipment to remove tonnes of concrete debris from collapsed biuldings.

Earthquake devastates Sumatra town – 30 Sept 09

A hueg earthquake has brought death and destruction to the Indonesia island of Sumatra.

Footage from the town of Padang show how the 7.6 magnitude temblor flattened homes and hospitals leaving thousands of people trapped under the rubble.

Residents scrambled to put out fires caused by the quake while rescue workers struggled to reach the coastal town after access roads were cut by a landslide.

Indonesia young people under threat – 18 Sept 09

Despite the recent death of Noordin Mohammed Top, the allgeed msaterminded of bombings in Bali and the Indonesian capital, authorities are still battling underground organisations seeking to attract young people to their violent ideologies.

One of the suicide bombers involved in the July attacks on two luxuyr hotels in Jakarta was Dani Dwee Per-mana, a 17-year-old boy, thought of by those who knew him as quiet, but friendly.

Nine people died in the Jakarta attacks and another 50 were injured.

Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen went to visit the family of the boy who was persuaded to carry a bomb itno the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta.
