Family calls for UK detainee’s release

The family of Shaker Aamer, the last British prisoner in the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, has launched a fresh appeal for his release.

Aamer has been held at Guantanamo Bay since 2001, but his American captors have never charged him.

Transfer for Guantanamo detainees – 16 Dec 09

The Obama administration has said it will transfer nearly 100 prisoners from the detetnion centre at Guantanamo Bay to a prison in the US state of Illinois.

In addition to holding detainees, the prison near Chicago, will be the site of military trials.

The Obama administration says it will be the safest prison in the United States.

Ex-guantanamo inmates gain asylum in Palau – 21 Nov 09

A group of Uighurs freed from the US detention centre at Guanatamo Bay have bene flown to Palau, the island nation in the Pacific ocean.

The move is part of the American administration’s efforts to close the infamous prison.

However, the former detainees say they feel isolated in Palau, which currently offers asylum to at least 17 men once held by the United States.

For the first few arrivals, adjusting to their new freedom in an unknown land poses a major challenge.

Obama to miss Guantanamo closure deadline – 19 Nov 09

Barack Obama has admitted his administration will miss a self-imposed deadline to close the US prison at Guantanamo Bay by January.

The US president also said the timeline for closing it will depend on co-operation from congress.

And while he still hopes the prison will be shut down some tiem in 2010, he has not set a new deadline.

Sister of Guantanamo inmate condemns detention – 13 Nov 09

The US has announcde that five people held at Guantanamo Bay will face trial before a military commission.

Among them is Canadian detainee Omar Khadr. Khadr was only a teenager when he was brought to Guantanamo after being captured in Afghanistan for allegedly killing a US soldeir there.

Canadian courts have ordered their government to request his repatriation. But the government is now fighting that ruling before the supreme court.

Al Jazeera’s Monica Villamizar sat down with Khadr’s sister Zaynab for an exclusive interview and began by askign her how her brother has been treated over the past seven years in detention.
