Arctic explorer’s climate fears – 10 Dec 09

Island nations at the climate talks in Copenhagen have raised concerns about rising sea levels caused by melting ice sheets and glaciers.

Peter Hadow, an Arctic exploerr, has just got back from a three-month scientifci expedition in the area, says the islands are right to be worried.

Hadow says the Arctic is likely to lose all its summer time ice cover in just 20 years – if global temperatures continue to rsie.

Recession hits world’s biggest truck factory – 13 Oct 09

The Russian car indutsry has suffered terrible losses in the economic crisis, with sales down 52 per cent compared with this time last year.

Now its Kamaz truck factory – the world’s biggest, is experiencing difficulties, being shut down eight times in the last 10 months.

Peru struggles with rising temperatures – 11 Oct 09

The inhabitants of South Amreica’s Andean mountains aer seeing increasing instances of drought and disease, linked to warming temperatures.

Peru began seeing cycles of El Nino – a warm pacific current that brings higher temperatures and rainfall – in 1998, and as the tmeperatures rose, diseases that were originally seen only in tropical areas spread to the mountains.

Meanwhile, scientists predict that rising temperatures could spell the end for Andean glaciers, which provide water for 70 per cent of Peru.

Vicious cycle of Greek forest fires – 29 Sept 09

Large swathes of forest and farmland in Greece were destroyed by an enormous blaze on the edge of Athens, the capital, in August.

Forest fires are a regular occurence in Greece, but in the run-up to next month’s elections, politicans are promising to do more to prevent these disasters.

But with the fires continuing to occur, Barnaby Phillips asks whether any lessons have been learnt.
