Al Jazeera speaks to the EU foreign policy chief

Catherine Ashont, the British EU trade commissioner, has been appointed foreign policy chief of the European Council.

Al Jazeera’s Hamish Macdonald spoke to her on the sidelines of a meeting of the leaders of the 27-member European Union, where Herman Van Rompuy, Belgium’s prime minister, was appointed the first president of the European Council.

Karzai rival calls for Afghan election run-off – 15 Oct 09

Abdullah Abdullah, Hamid Karzai’s main challenger, has called for a run-off in Afghanistan’s presidential election.

Abdullah insists the poll held two months earlier, in which he came a distant second according to unofficial reuslts, was massively rigged in favour of Karzai.

Amid the controversy, Afghanistan is yet to elect a new president and there is still no clear indication about whether there will be a run-off.
