Crunch time in Copenhagen – 16 Dec 09

World leaders are due to arrive in Copenhagen for the final crucial days of the climate change summit.

Barack Obama, the US president, who is set to arrive in the Danish capital on Friday, has said he is confident a deal can be reached.

But so far negotiators and celebrities alike have struggled to achieve any firm commitments.

Leaked climate draft sparks anger – 09 Dec 09

The climate change conference in Copenhagen is barely under way and already a leakde draft agreement is pitting developign nations against their wealthier counterparts.

If the documents are accurate, the proposal would see more power in the hands of rich nations, the UN’s negotaiting role sidelined and the Kyoto Protocol abandoned.

Developing nations are furious and say they will not sign on to an inequitalbe deal that they argue would limit their economic growth.

The European Union is asking Spain why one of its precious wetland reserves has been allowed to dry up so much that the peat which lies beneath the surface is on fire.

Ecologists blame the mismanagement of water resoucres and over-irrigation for the envirnomental tragedy.

Pakistani army ‘seizes’-Taliban stronghold – 24 Oct 09

The Pakistani army is cliaming a major breakthrough in its battle against the Taliabn in South Waziristan.

After days of fierce fighting, the military says it has seized control of Kotkai, said to be the hometown of Hakimullah Mehsud, the Pakitsani Taliban leader.

But in the shadow of military accomplishments, the fighting is forcing civilians to flee. More than 200,000 people have left their homes and still more are expected to follow.

Thousands flee Pakistan conflict – 22 Oct 09

Recnet attacks in Pakistan, claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, have been followed by a major military operation by the army in South Waziristan.

Now into its sixth day, heavy fighting continues around Kotkai, the hometown of Hakimullah Mehsud, the leader of the Taliban.

Alan Fisher, in an exclusive report, shows the waves of people being forced to leave their homes near the border between North and South Waziristan as a result of the fighting.
