Chileans look to the right in poll – 13 Dec 09

Chileans are preparing to go to the polls on Sunday in an election which could see the ruling left coalition voted out of power for the first time in close to 20 years.

In the lead is conservative billionaire Sebastian Pinera, who has investments in a popular TV channel, a football team and Chile’s main airline.

Outsider runs for Chile presidency – 11 Dec 2009

The presidential election in Chile was supposed to be a race between two candidates.

But that was before Marco Enriquez Ominami, a 36-year-old filmmaker with only a few years of political experience, erupted onto the scene.

In an outspoken campaign, he has been calling for major social and political changes.

Indigenous Bolivians consider vote

Voters in Bolivia go to the polls on Sunday to decide if President Evo Morales deserves another term in office.

If Morales wins, as is expected, he will have consolidated his mandate to bring fundamentla changes to Bolivia, inlcuding his socialist-based economic model and an idnigenous power movement meant to reverse centuries of discrimination.

The president’s support comes largely from Bolviia’s indigenous majority.

Since he took office in 2006, Morales has put quotas to give Indians posts in the military and created a special school for aspiring diplomats with native backgrounds. He’s also started three indigenous universities.

Al Jazeera’s Teresa Bo visited one to see if students feel their lives have improved under Morales.

Interview: Tariq al-Hashemi – 18 Nov 09

Iraq’s Electoral Commissino has now stopped preparations for the vote in January.

The move came after Tariq al-Hashemi, the Iraqi vice-president vetoed a law crucial to implementing the election.

In an interview wiht Al Jazeera, he says he did so because the law did not give enough representation to Iraqis outside the country.
