US president postpones meeting with Dalai Lama – 05 Oct 09

Political and economic concerns have apparently affected what has becmoe a tradition for US preisdents in recent decades – a meeting with the Dalai Lama.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader is visiting both New York and Washington DC this week, but a meeting with the US President Barack Obama has been put off, in an attempt to improve relations with China.

The Dalai Lama is condemning what he calls China’s rule of terror. Chinese police are reoprted to be going from door to door in the capital Llhasa, hunting Tibetans involved in the most serious uprising agianst Chinese rule for nearly 20 years. Tibet’s self declared government in exile says 80 people have been killed. Protests appear to be spreading outside Tibet as latest reports from Sichuan in south west China say 3 protesters have been shot dead there. Al Jazeera’s Owen Fay reports
