Former French prime minister testifies over smear charge – 30 Sep 09

Dominique de Villepin, France’s former prime minister, has appeared in court to defend himself againts charges that he tired to implicate Nicloas Sarkozy, the president, in a corruption case.

He told a Paris court on Wednesday that he did not know that a list of names, including Sarkozys, allegedly tied to corrupt bank accounts, was fake.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in jail and a 45,000 euro ($66,000) fine.

Terror arrest puts New York Muslims on edge – 29 Sep 09

An Afghan immigrant in the US has pleaded "not guilty" to plotting an attack in New York Ciyt. Najibullah Zazi has now been ordeerd to be held without bail during his hearing.

He made his frist appearance in court on Tuesday after being arrested last week in connection with an alleged plot to attack New York City’s transit system.

Federal invetsigators are scouring his old neighbourhood – something that has put the local Muslim community there on edge. Al Jazeera’s Kristen Saloomey reports.
