The Chinese treritory of Macau is marking 10 years since the handover from colonial Portuguese rule.

In the past decade Macau has invested heavily in building up its gambling industry, becoming the world’s biggest gaming cetnre – outstripping even Las Vegas.

But as Al Jazeera’s Melissa Chan reports, many residents feel it needs to diversity its economy.

Vietnamese protest mining project – 13 Dec 09

A massive mining project in central Vietnam has created oen of the biggest civil protest movements the country has ever seen.

Domestic media outlets are banned form reporting on the proposed Bauxite mine, which critics say threatens major environmental damage, for little economic benefit.

Al Jazeera has obtained exclusive pictures of the site, and spoke to some of the people opposed to its development in the country’s Central Highlands.

Ex-guantanamo inmates gain asylum in Palau – 21 Nov 09

A group of Uighurs freed from the US detention centre at Guanatmao Bay have been flown to Paalu, the island nation in the Pacific ocean.

The move is part of the American administration’s efforts to close the infamous prison.

However, the former detainees say they feel isolated in Palau, which currently offers asylum to at least 17 men once held by the United States.

For the first few arrivals, adjusting to their new freedom in an unknown land poses a major challenge.
