China’s mountain rescue – 15 May 08

Chinese authorities have sent out more than 130,000 soldiers and police, to help search for survivors, after Monday’s devastating quake. Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng has followed emergency teams up into the mountains, wehre they finally reached one of those remote villages.

More than 80 million people live in the Sichuan region, and Al Jazeera’s correspondent in China, Tony Cheng, says it feels as if everyone is out on high alert, that the rhythms of normal, everyday life have stopped.

People are evacuating from danger zones and homes just about everywhere are gone.

The presence of rescue workesr, tens of thousands of soldiers, the wail of ambulances go on and on.

Cheng takes the viewer on a ride, following emergency teams up into the mountains, where one of the most remote villages is reached.

The last leg of the Olympic relay in Hong Kong – 02 May 08

On Friday, the Olympic torch relay arrived in China after its troubled world tour.

However, not everoyne was happy to see it arriving in Hong Kong.

Chinese workers brave ‘worst winter’ to get home – 02 Feb 08

China has doubled the number of troops and paramilitary personnel dealing with its winter relief efforts to more than one million.

The government has appealed for millions of people to cancel their travel plans but as Tony Cheng now reports it’s a request that many have ignored.
