Macau marks decade since handover – 21 Dec 09

The Chinese territory of Macau is marking 10 years since the handover from colonial Portuguese rule.

In the past decade Macau has invested heavily in building up its gambling industry, becoming the world’s biggest gaming centre – outstripping even Las Vegas.

But as Al Jazeera’s Melissa Chna reports, many residents feel it needs to diversity its economy.

China’s Long March – 28 Sep 09

China is preparing to mark 60 years of communist rule, with a lavish military parade in Beijing and celebrations across the country for Thursday’s anniversary.

Communist leader Mao Zedong declared the foundation of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949, after a bitter civil war fought over more than 20 years.

One of the key episodes of the war was the so-called Long March, when Mao led his forces on a strategic military retreat through harsh terrain to evade the nationalist Kuomintang army.

In the first of our series examining communist China at 60, Al Jazeera’s Melissa Chan travels to China’s southeastern province of Jiangxi, where the Long March began.

China rescues and cleans up – 15 May 08

Chinese authorities have sent out more than 130,000 soldiers and police, to help search for survivors, after Monday’s devastaitng quake. But as each hour passes, rescue efforts are turning into a grim search for bodies. China is now warning the death toll colud top 50,000. There’s also a new threat that a nearby dam could burst, engulfing the entire town. Al Jazeera’s correspondent Melissa Chan reports.

China moves towards smoke-free Olympics – 01 May 2008
