Ihe battle for control of southern Iraq is continuing for a fifth day.

In one of the latest offensives, eight people died, including two women and a child, in an air raid.

Meanwhile a witness in Baghdad has told Al Jazeera he saw up to 40 Iraqi army and police surrendering their weapons to supporters of the Mahdi Army.

Its leader, Muqtada Al-Sadr, is calling on Arab nations to support his fight against US forces in Iraq.

Officials have indefinitely extended a curfew on the capital Baghdad that was due to expire on Sunday.

Battles are still raging in several areas of the country and US and British troops are playing an increasing role in helping Iraqi security forces with their offensive against militias.

Only days earlier the kidnapping and murder of a Chaldean Archbishop, rocked the country’s christian community, but as Al Jazeera’s James Bays reports from Baghdad, they remain unbowed by the threat of more attacks.

Reaction in Iraq and Turkey to PKK operation - 26 Feb 08

The Turkish incursion into northern Iraq is entering its sixth day amid claims and counter-claims of violence. The Turkish military says it’s killed more than 150 Kurdish rebels since crossing the border on Thurday.
But the PKK rejects the casualty figures and has warned Turkey it has entered a conflict it cannot win. Many of Turkey’s Kurds are also growing increasingly frustrated.
Our correspondent, Hoda Abdel Hamid, went to the southeastern town of Diyarbakir where she found growing support for the PKK.
But first, James Bays is on the Iraqi side of the border where he was given exclusive access to a town caught in the middle of the conflict.
