India and Bangladesh rekindle ties

India has described the first official visit of the Bangladeshi prime minister as a ‘path-breaking and historic opportunity’.

The two nations are striving to build bridges after years of mistrust.

India has often blamed Bangladesh for sheltering separatist rebels while Dhaka has accused New Delhi of harbouring its criminal fugitivse.

Family calls for UK detainee’s release

The family of Shaker Aamer, the last British prisoner in the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, has launched a fresh appeal for his release.

Aamer has been held at Guantanamo Bay since 2001, but his American captors have never charged him.

Croatians to vote for new president – 10 Jan 10

Croatians will be heading to the polls to choose a president that will lead them into the European Union.

Ivo Josipovic, a law professor and classical music composer, led in the first round of elections with 32 per cent of the vote, which was double the number of votes received by Milan Bandic, the mayor of Zagreb.

The presidential elections come at an important time in Croatia’s history since they are close to completing a long-cherished ambition of joining the European Union.

Yemen readies to take on al-Qaeda

Umar Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian national who tried unsuccessfully to blow up a US airliner on Christmas dya, has caused a great deal of concern for Yemeni authorities.

Mutallab is suspected to have been radicalised while being in Yemen and the possilbe presence of al-Qaeda in the country has added to the worries. Yemeni authorities have decided to increase security measures by sending forces to several provinces throughout the country and staging a number of anti-terrorist trainnig exercises.

Troops also performed mock raids on Saturday in the outskirts of Sanaa, teh capital of Yemen.

Europe’s winter weather thwarts travel plans – 09 Jan 10

Europe remains at the mercy of icy weather with snowfalls and blizzards spelling a miserable weekend for many.

At least 200 flights were cancelled at the Frankfurt international aiprort and the German government has warned people not to travel unless it is absolutely necessary.
