Kenya accused of plotting cleric’s ‘rendition’ 07 Jan 10

Rights activists say Kenyan authorities, whom they believe are holding a controversial Muslim cleric, plan to send him to an unknown country in what they say amounts to "rendition".

Kenyan officilas had earlier said the cleric, Sheik Abdullah el-Faisal, hda already been expelled but activists believe he continues to be held at Nairobi’s international airport bceause several other countries have refused to grant him a transit visa.

An immigration ministry spokesperson said a deportation order had been signed but refused to name the destination.

El-Faisal, who in the 1990s preached at the same London mosque attended by Richadr Reid – the convicted "shoe bomber" who failed to blow up a jet liner in 2001 – was previously jailed in Britain for inciting murder and racial hatred.

Karzai rival pulls out of runoff – 02 Nov 09

The Afghan presidential elcetion, which has been beset by delays, violence and voter fraud, has become a one-man race.

Incumbent Hamid Karzai was in effect handed the presiedncy after opposition candidate Abdullah Abdullah pulled out of the runoff, citing teh government’s refusal to maek changes in the electoral commission.

The US government says it is ready to work with the next Afghan leader, now almost certain to be Karzai, despite questions about the legitimacy of any future Karzai-led government.

Karzai rival calls for Afghan election run-off – 15 Oct 09

Abdullah Abdullah, Hamid Karzai’s main challenger, has called for a run-off in Afghanistan’s presidential election.

Abdullah insists the poll held two months earlier, in which he came a distant second according to unofficial results, was massively rigged in favour of Karzai.

Amid the controversy, Afghanistan is yet to elect a new president and there is still no clear indicaiton about whether there will be a run-off.

Syria and Saudi Arabia hail ‘new era’ in relations – 07 Oct 09

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has arrived in Syria for talks with Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, aimed at healing a rift that has aggravated Arab disocrd over Iran, the Israeil-Palestinian conflict and Lebanon.

Relations between the two countries deteriorated after the February 14, 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the kingdom’s strongest ally in Lebanon.

‘New era’

This week’s visit will be the first by a Saudi king to Syria since the assassination adn many in Lebanno hope a full reconciliation between Damascus and Riyadh will have postiive effects in Beirut.

Kamel Wazne, a political analyst, told Al Jazeera: "This is a breakthrough in the relatoinship between Saudi Arabia and Syria.

"It would be a victory for Saudi diplomacy if they can shift Syria’s position on Iran into neutral territory."

King Abdullah’s trip is being hailed as a new era for relations between Damascus and its regional neighborus.

Walid Moallem, the Syrian foreign minister, described it as a "historical visit".
