The Krue Se Mosque in Pattani is not Thailand’s biggest or most beautiful mosque, but it is its oldest and most famous. And what happened here three years ago continues to resonate through the region. The mosque’s walls have been repaired, but the scars are still painful. In 2004, after an eight-hour standoff with Malay Muslim separatists and exchanges of gunfire, the Thai army attacked the mosque, killing 32 fighters. David Hawkins reports from Pattani.
